Frequently Asked Questions

The temperature range of the KAPI 600R is ideal for industrial waste heat recovery, cooling and heating in industrial processes, cooling AI data centres, and supplying heat to local and district heating networks. With scaling, plant capacity of up to 15 MW or more can be achieved.
-
Yes. The KAPI 600R is a heat pump that adjusts its heat output according to the required sink temperature. At the same time, it cools the heat source circuit. This allows the cooling source to be utilized via a hydraulic control system. Either the sink or the source or both can be used a control target.
-
Yes. A retrofit is possible given there is sufficient headroom (>4m above the unit) and space around the unit along with necessary hoisting equipment.
-
Yes. Where a cooling tower simply rejects heat to atmosphere consuming water and power for its fans and pumps, it is a possibility to use the KAPI 600R which absorbs that same heat from the process at its evaporator and upgrades it into useful heat on the hot side. The cooling duty the tower would have provided is therefore delivered by the unit, while the rejected energy is recovered rather than wasted. This eliminates the water consumption and the associated treatment and operating costs of an adiabatic cooling tower and turns a heat-rejection cost into a usable energy stream. This applies provided the required cooling temperature lies within the unit’s source-side operating range.
-
In most applications, such as industrial waste heat recovery as an alternative to recooling systems or the cooling of AI data centres, the use of the KAPI 600R eliminates the need for adiabatic systems. The operating temperatures allow for dry cooling operations throughout the year, even in hot regions.
-
The goal of modern heating, cooling and AI Datacentres is sustainability and decarbonization, therefore we need the most efficient, compact, scalable and plug & play units. The KAPI 600R, with its compact design and innovative thermal cycle, utilizes internal energy losses and maximizes customer benefits. This covers a typical operation source temperature range of 25°C - 40°C.
-
The compact dimensions of the KAPI 600R make it suitable for use in most retrofit applications. This model comes as standard with an integrated drip tray. When installed outdoors with the weatherproof housing option, it is significantly smaller than a container.
-
The benefits of standardisation are already evident in the quality and procurement of the components used. Serial production optimises stock management and production. This results in shorter lead times. The added benefits include uniform products over time with predictable and well documented service requirements. Furthermore, we achieve predictable and verified capacity and efficiency. When calculating using KUMO, you get instant feedback and all needed documentation for a well packaged document for the customer.
-
Each KAPI 600R operates with a refrigerant charge of 125 kg of R717 (ammonia) - a low charge for a unit of this capacity.
-
Yes. In addition to Modbus TCP/IP, the unit supports Siemens OUC (Open User Communication) over TCP/IP for reading and writing all relevant parameters, and remote viewing of the HMI screen via VNC over Ethernet.
-
The tray ensures that no liquid ( refrigerant or oil) can leak outside the unit, containing any spill for safe clean-up and preventing it from reaching drains or the environment. This supports compliance with EN378-3:5.14.3.1 and local environmental requirements.
-
The internal water cooling recovers the losses from the drive, motor, oil cooler and cylinder heads and feeds them back into the evaporator, which improves efficiency and greatly reduces the machine-room cooling demand (~ 90%). Water cooling also allows much more compact components (a smaller motor frame, no fans), giving a smaller footprint and quieter operation.

At full load and 40°C/35°C source side inlet/outlet and sink side 70°C/90°C, a system COP of about 4.4 can be expected. At typical operation points, expect COPs around 5. This COP includes all losses in the system.
Note: COP = total heating output / total power consumed by the whole unit. -
Although it is theoretically possible to calculate the SCOP of any product, the Ecodesign directive mandates it for units < 400 kW in terms of heat pumps. Therefore, our mHEAT KAPI falls out of scope. Therefore it is important to reply on application based COP calculation rather than any SCOP figures.

The principal advantage of the reciprocating compressor over a screw compressor is its part-load efficiency. A screw compressor controls capacity with a slide valve, which introduces significant internal losses and a steep efficiency drop as it unloads. The reciprocating compressor instead controls capacity by unloading individual cylinders (in steps of 100, 83, 66, 50 and 33 %) combined with variable speed, so it maintains high efficiency across the whole load range. As most installations run at part load for much of the year, this delivers a meaningful seasonal energy advantage.
-
COPt, the total coefficient of performance, accounts for the useful output on both the hot side and the cold side of the unit, divided by the electrical power input. Because the KAPI 600R delivers useful heat while simultaneously cooling the heat-source circuit, both outputs can be useful at the same time. Where the cooling duty is also valued — for example when the unit replaces a separate chiller or cooling tower — the total COP is therefore higher than a coefficient of performance that credits the heating output alone.
EER = total cooling output / total power consumed by the whole unit.
COP = total heating output / total power consumed by the whole unit.
COPt = total heating output + total cooling output/ total power consumed by the whole unit
-
Very little. With the integrated system cooling, the losses that would normally be rejected to the machine room are instead recovered into the evaporator. In testing this reduced the heat rejection by about 90 %, leaving a maximum of less than 5 kW as radiant heat — compared with the 35–40 kW typical of an equivalent air-cooled installation.
-
The KAPI 600R is delivered fully tested and ready for operation. In accordance with national regulations, the working fluids (refrigerant and oil) are not included in the delivery. Installation in the machine room is carried out in accordance with EN 378, and the hydraulic and electrical connections are described in the operating instructions. With the weatherproof-enclosure option, the machine can be installed outdoors without a machine room.
-
The complete unit is supported on 8 captive anti-vibration machine feet. These mounts load the rubber in compression and shear to give a large reduction in transmitted vibration and include built-in overload protection for transport. They isolate the unit from the building structure, minimizing compressor vibration from being transmitted to the foundation. In addition, the electrical components are isolated from vibration within the unit frame using chassis dampers.
-
The oil is a proprietary formulation. All expected performance figures rely on using this recommended oil from Mayekawa. Any non-miscible oil for ammonia approved by the compressor manual can be used but will not guarantee expected performance.
-
Yes. Reparability was a priority from the outset. The base frame uses pre-cut holes and standardised brackets and supports, which are offered as spare parts and fit without on-site modification. The compressor is fully overhaulable, with all wear parts inspected and replaced at defined intervals, and the major bought-in components — motor, drive and heat exchangers — are standard, individually replaceable units. Mass production also ensures spare-part availability and documentation from the time of ordering.
-
Yes. Every serially produced unit undergoes end-of-line testing (EOLT) before delivery to ensure consistent quality.
-
The unit is expected to run for 25 to 30 years when all maintenance requirements and operates within the recommended working range.
-
Yes. The scope of the test depends on the contractual agreements. We can test one or more operational points depending on the requirements.
